Please note that MISS DIG 811 does NOT mark the lines. The utility companies are responsible for marking their own lines via themselves or a 3rd party locating company.

Note: If a homeowner has hired a contractor/excavator for excavation on their property it is the responsibility of the contractor/excavator to contact MISS DIG 811 for a ticket per PA 174.

Note: A business day is defined as 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, not including holidays https://www.missdig811.org/contact-us/emergency-hours.html

What Type of Ticket Should I Place?

I am planning a project or getting bids from contractors: Place a Design Ticket. Blueprints and other utility information will be sent within 10 calendar days. YOU CANNOT DIG ON A DESIGN TICKET.

I am ready to dig: place a normal 21 Day ticket that will be marked within 3 business days. Please note that excavation must start within 14 calendar days of the dig start date on the MISS DIG 811 ticket. A new ticket must be obtained if excavation has not occurred within that time frame.

• You will receive an emailed Confirmation Sheet from OCARS_PRO@missdig811.org with your ticket number. Save it, because it will be used to check Positive Response and will be needed if additional assistance is required.

Information you will need:

• The type of work being done; groundwork, landscaping, etc.

• The contractor or person performing the work.

• The dig site location (address, county and city, village, or township) of the work area.

• Nearest cross streets to the work site.

• Where specifically on the property, the work is taking place.

2: Wait until Work Legal Start Date for utilities to be marked.

• The utility company will have until the Work Legal Start Date to mark the approximate location of their lines with paint and / or flags. Utility locators should always have clearly visible identification and rarely need to enter your home to complete a locate request. MISS DIG 811 personnel do not locate underground lines. The utility companies are responsible for marking their own lines via themselves or a 3rd party locating company.

• Then the utility company will record the status of the markings in Positive Response.

• Some lines will not be marked because they are not owned by the utility company. Those will need to be marked by a private locator. Some examples include sprinkler lines, electric to a garage, pool lines, electric fences, water well, and septic.

3: Check status online with Positive Response to confirm all utilities have been marked.

• You must wait until the Work Legal Start Date for a response from the utility companies, so they have time to mark their lines with flags and / or paint.

• After the Work Legal Start Date, you must go online to Check Positive Response. This can be done by logging on to your OCA account [insert hyperlink] or by going to missdig811.org and clicking on Check Status. This is to verify that ALL utilities have been marked or cleared. Enter your ticket number and review the responses from the utilities.

• ALL the utility responses must be either Marked, Exempt from Marking, or No Conflict before beginning the work.

• If you see a response that says Has Not Responded or if you see the evidence of utilities on-site without markings and your Work Legal Start Date has arrived, then you will need to contact MISS DIG 811 by dialing 811 or 800-482-7171.

• Ask the representative for assistance from those utility companies who have responded with Has Not Responded or Not Complete

• Positive Response codes

4: Hand dig within 4ft. of paint or flags.

• You are ready to begin your project if all utilities are marked.

• If you are digging within the Caution Zone, which is within 4 feet on either side of the paint or flags, you must use hand digging to expose the utility.

• If you are digging in the Safe Zone, it means your dig location is more than 4 feet from either side of the paint or flags, and there is no need to hand expose.
