Why & When to Place a Locate Request

Why to Place:

You may be surprised by what's buried in your yard. That's because most electric, gas, water, sewer and telecommunications companies are delivering utility services to you underground. To avoid personal injury and damage to those underground lines, state law requires you to contact MISS DIG 811 before starting a digging project, regardless of the project size or depth. MISS DIG 811's services are free. There are no fees associated with web access and of course, the call is free.

You can prevent injury and avoid damage by following these five important steps:

  • Place a locate request 
  • Wait 3 business days after your request is placed
  • Confirm status online
  • Hand dig 4ft from flags and paint
  • Dig safely 

When to Place:

A locate request needs to be placed at least 3 business days prior to but no more than 14 calendar days before conducting excavation on your property. Contact MISS DIG 811 by using OneCallAccess dialing 811 or 800-482-7171 to place a locate request online.

Make sure you notify MISS DIG 811 if you are doing any of the following projects:

  • Fences
  • Mailbox Posts
  • Room Additions
  • Gardens
  • Swimming Pools
  • Landscaping
